The Characters of Solstice

In a world where people known as Scribes can make any story they write come true, an organization of Editors must watch over them in secret. Among the Editors, Io is the best, and the most ruthless. But even her skills are no match for a Scribe named Nadie, whose powers are far greater, and more terrifying, than anything ever seen by Io or her peers.

Io - Io, like her dual Japanese-Mexican ancestry, is a character of dual personalities. As a loose-cannon member of a clandestine group called The Editors, her job is to hunt down and eliminate rogue Scribes. But it is her hatred of injustice and cruelty against the innocent that creates and sustains her insatiable desire for vengeance against society’s ills. Operating beyond the fringes of society and even The Editors, Io ’s philosophy is that only cruelty can destroy cruelty. In upholding her beliefs, she becomes a criminal herself. What she doesn’t know is just how much her profound sense of hatred and hopelessness will ultimately cost her and those she professes to stand up for.

Nakamura Yuniko - Yuniko is a Researcher—a computer hacker specializing in tracking Scribes—partnered with Io. Formerly a hacker calling herself “Lain,” she gains notoriety in the hacker underworld by toppling a major Japanese corporation. A self-proclaimed cyber-vigilante, Yuniko uses her skills to go after disreputable companies and scam artists. She joins The Editors and partners with Io because of the bond, and the similar traumatic pasts, that the two women share. In cyberspace, Yuniko is as confident, influential, and respected as her Anime namesake. In real life, she is timid, insecure, and can never seem to speak clearly. Her penchant for J-pop music and candy bars is indicative of her stunted maturation; despite being 29 years old, Yuniko is still a scared, insecure child.

Jai Lin Kup - Jai Lin is a Scribe. But unlike most Scribes, who abuse their power to commit crimes of varying severity, Jai Lin refuses to use her abilities for any kind of gain. But when Scribes become the target of a faceless, ghostlike killer, Jai Lin is reluctantly forced to use her powers to survive. Mature beyond her 32 years and graced with a kind, maternal disposition, Jai Lin nevertheless is haunted by her family's secrets, and by the mystery surrounding her live-in companion, a woman named Viala. The truth about Viala will reveal the extent of Jai Lin’s convictions, and, ultimately, her ability to save those she cares for.
